Straight answers about accounts, credits, bring-your-own-key, ads, devices, and reading features.
What is SimplRead?
SimplRead is a reading tool that turns long articles, pasted text, newsletters, and captioned YouTube videos into short plain-language slides. You move through them one at a time instead of scrolling a dense page. Learn more in How it works and About.
Is SimplRead a medical or therapy product?
No. We build accessibility-minded features for people who find long text hard — including many dyslexic and ADHD readers — but we do not diagnose, treat, or cure any condition. It is a reading aid, not clinical advice.
Do I need an account?
Yes for saving history, syncing settings, and using hosted tokens or a stored API key. Sign up is free with email and password. You can delete your account anytime from Settings.
What does free include?
Free accounts get 5 hosted simplifications per calendar month. Re-opening something already in your history does not use a token. The free hosted path shows ads in the reader to help cover costs. You can also add your own API key for unlimited simplifications billed by your provider.
What is a credit?
1 credit = 1 new simplification. Failed jobs on our side are not charged. Re-reads and cache hits for the same content are free. Credits are one-time top-ups (not a subscription) and last 12 months from purchase. See pricing.
BYOK vs hosted tokens — which should I use?
Hosted tokens are simplest if you want SimplRead to call the model for you. BYOK (bring your own key) is better if you already pay OpenAI, Anthropic, or another provider and want their models and billing. We wrote a full comparison: BYOK vs hosted tokens explained.
Where is my API key stored?
Keys you save in Settings are encrypted at rest on our server and used only to call your provider when you simplify. We never display the full key again after you save it. Details: Privacy Policy.
When do I see ads?
Ads can appear in the reader when you are on the free hosted path or using BYOK without purchased credits. While you hold a purchased credit balance, reading is ad-free across web, extension, and apps. We do not fill empty marketing pages with ad units — ads belong in the reader where the free service is delivered.
Does the Chrome extension work offline?
No. Simplifying needs a network connection to reach SimplRead and your AI provider. Once slides are saved in history, you can reopen them when you are back online.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. Install the Android app or iOS app, or use the web app in a mobile browser. Share links from other apps into SimplRead when the share sheet is available.
What reading options help with dyslexia or ADHD?
Try larger spacing, dyslexia-friendly mode, bionic-style text, and word highlighting. Slide-by-slide pacing is often the biggest help: one idea at a time, clear progress, easy to pause. Tips: Dyslexia-friendly web reading and Slide-by-slide reading and ADHD.
Will SimplRead replace the original article?
No. Slides are a simplified guide. For quotes, numbers, or legal language, open the source. We keep the source URL with your history when you started from a link.
How do I contact you?
Email privacy@simplread.com for privacy, account, or product questions. We read every message, even if replies sometimes take a day or two.
